Police in Toronto report gunfire near the U.S. consulate on University Avenue early on Monday, marking the second shooting at or near the diplomatic building within about four months. Officers were alerted after hearing a firearm discharge in the area and arrive to find evidence that a weapon had been fired, including shell casings. Police say no injuries are reported. Authorities cordon off the area as investigators look for clues.
Toronto police also state they do not yet identify any suspects. Some reports cite observations by officers, including a description of a vehicle seen fleeing the scene after the shooting. A deputy police chief says the consulate’s facade is struck by a bullet.
The New York Times and other outlets note that it is too early for police to determine whether Monday’s incident is linked to a prior March shooting that targeted the same diplomatic post. In that earlier case, three people have already been arrested and charged, according to reporting from one outlet.
