Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the United States should not restrict or ban advanced Chinese AI models as a strategy for competing with China. In an interview reported by multiple outlets, Zuckerberg argues that the current U.S. approach to AI policy is too focused on limits rather than on accelerating development. He says banning foreign open-source models would not be productive and that competition, along with identifying specific roadblocks to progress, is a more effective path.
Zuckerberg also opposes the idea that policy should be driven by efforts to exclude China’s technology. He cautions that American “frontier” AI labs could influence regulation in ways that stifle domestic rivals, rather than fostering broader innovation. The outlets also note that he continues to support open-source AI models, which are widely used by developers outside the U.S., including in China.
Separately, one report says Meta is in discussions to lease computing capacity to Anthropic for a significant sum, highlighting ongoing involvement in the broader AI infrastructure and services market.
