The Pentagon is preparing a review of U.S. troop deployments in Europe that will give Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth multiple options by Nov. 6. Several outlets report the review will produce “at least four” sets of troop deployment choices, ahead of a later, December deadline for completing the overall review.
According to reporting based on a document seen by Reuters, the review was announced in June and is part of a six-month process. NATO allies are concerned the review could result in large-scale reductions to the roughly 80,000 U.S. forces stationed across Europe.
Outlets also highlight that some allies view the effort in a political context. The reporting says allies worry the review may be used to “punish” countries that President Donald Trump believes did not sufficiently support U.S. actions related to the Israel-Iran war. Other coverage focuses more narrowly on the timeline and the preparation of decision options for Hegseth.
