Google and Apple begin showing a new label for a Great Lake in the United States, changing “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” for U.S. users. The updates follow an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump directing the U.S. government to rename the lake in official geographic records. CBS News, The New York Times, and other outlets report that both apps roll out the change based on U.S. government naming standards.

Google and Apple each update their map displays in the U.S., while the labeling diverges by location. Multiple outlets say Canadian users continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and users outside North America may see both names depending on the app’s regional settings. Canadian officials reject the renaming, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who say the historic name will remain “Lake Ontario.” National Post and other reporting describe temporary use of “Lake America” on some Ontario government websites that rely on Google map data, followed by corrections back to “Lake Ontario.”

Outlets also note that not all services comply. ZeroHedge and Times of India report that MapQuest refuses to change its label, leading to different experiences across map platforms.
