India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rise about 15% year-on-year to roughly ₹2 lakh crore in August, according to reports. Total collections for the month are cited at ₹1,99,853 crore, up from ₹1,74,116 crore a year earlier.

Sources agree that higher GST receipts from imports play a major role, alongside growth in domestic transactions. Import-related GST revenue increases sharply (reported as 29% year-on-year to ₹62,604 crore), while domestic transaction collections grow more moderately (reported as 9.3% to more than ₹1.37 lakh crore). Central GST and State GST collections are also listed, with IGST contributing more than ₹1.15 lakh crore.

Several outlets note that refunds rise sharply during the month, narrowing the gap between gross and net collections. Refunds are reported up 68% year-on-year to ₹31,795 crore. After deducting refunds, net GST collections are reported at about ₹1.68 lakh crore, representing an 8.3% increase. One report also compares the August figure with July collections (₹2.11 lakh crore) and highlights that import growth outpaces domestic growth again.
