Iran says it will announce in the coming days a new restricted (“exclusion”) zone in the Gulf, and will also release maps for a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement follows an exchange of strikes on shipping over the weekend, which contributes to higher oil prices.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei says the restricted zone would begin at the point where the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports starts and extend into parts of the Gulf. Multiple outlets report that Tehran also intends to publish passage routes for ships using the Strait of Hormuz.
While outlets largely agree on the planned announcement and the general starting point tied to the U.S. blockade, they differ in emphasis. Some frame it as an “exclusion zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz, while others describe it more broadly as a Gulf-wide restricted area beginning from the blockade line. Several sources also note that the precise boundaries and coordinates have not yet been made public, and that the exact timing and details remain unclear until Iran issues the maps.
