Peter Obi’s visit to Benue State is disrupted as a group of people blocks his convoy while he travels toward Yelwata, in Guma Local Government Area. Multiple outlets report that the obstruction occurs on the Gboko Road/Boko Road route as the convoy attempts to enter the state, with video evidence shared by Obi’s photographer showing people wielding sticks and pursuing the vehicle.
Obi and political allies describe the incident as an attack or obstruction carried out by suspected political thugs. The NDC, the Obidient Movement, and others condemn the action and call for an investigation. Benue’s government denies involvement and says it was not aware of the visit, while other reporting focuses on the humanitarian context, saying Obi is travelling to console communities affected by insecurity and killings.
Benue police say they are notified of the planned trip and deploy security, but decide not to use force immediately to avoid escalation. Police later escort Obi safely to the airport and he leaves the state. The Benue police command subsequently arrests 46 suspects and says investigations continue to identify others behind the incident and determine motives.
