Gary Oldman, who portrayed Sirius Black in multiple “Harry Potter” films, says he expects HBO’s upcoming TV series adaptation of the Wizarding World to be “more satisfying” for fans than the movies. In interviews, he points to the movies’ tighter runtime as a key reason they could not include as much character and story detail from J.K. Rowling’s books.
Oldman also praises the work done by the original film cast and director Chris Columbus, describing the early movies as foundational. Across outlets, the shared view is that television’s longer format will allow the adaptation to cover more of the source material than the Warner Bros. film installments did.
The reports also note the series is scheduled to premiere around Christmas 2026, though they frame Oldman’s comments primarily as his expectations about how the show’s structure will change what viewers experience compared with the theatrical films.
