Saudi Arabia’s coalition says it intercepts and destroys a drone headed toward Mecca before it enters restricted airspace over the holy city. The coalition reports the interception occurs south of Mecca and presents the incident as a threat to pilgrims and to Islam’s holiest sites.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki says the security of the two holiest sites and pilgrims is a “red line” and that Saudi authorities will take “necessary deterrent measures” in response. The Guardian reports that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation condemns the attack, while the Iran-aligned Houthi group rejects Saudi claims and denies targeting Mecca.
NDTV adds that Saudi authorities report no damage to key religious sites connected to the incident, including the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba.
