Apple is preparing to launch Apple Pay in India next month, beginning with support for Axis Bank credit cards, according to multiple sources. The move would extend Apple’s contactless payments and digital wallet service into one of the few large economies where it has not been available.
The reports describe the rollout as phased, starting with one major banking partner rather than a broad multi-bank launch. Sources say Apple has been working to expand support across more lenders over time through direct, bank-by-bank deals. Reuters-cited accounts attribute earlier delays in part to bank pricing and regulatory hurdles that needed to be resolved before India could be added to Apple Pay’s footprint.
The Economic Times adds that Apple has held discussions with other large private-sector banks, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, but that commercial terms have not yet been agreed. Both outlets note that India’s digital payments environment is dominated by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and RBI changes have enabled biometric authentication for card payments, supporting Apple Pay’s use of Face ID and Touch ID with bank cards.
