Fighting in Yemen is displacing large numbers of people inside the country and driving others to flee by sea toward Djibouti, according to UN agencies. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says at least 112,000 people are displaced within Yemen over roughly two weeks, while nearly 3,000 people cross by sea to Djibouti.
The UN migration and refugee agencies describe the renewed fighting as a new layer on top of Yemen’s long-running humanitarian emergency. Sources attribute the escalation to renewed clashes along Yemen’s western coast and the Red Sea, with reporting also noting territorial changes that affect access to the Bab al-Mandab strait. Several outlets add that Djibouti faces mounting pressure on health, education and other services, with authorities preparing for a possible larger influx.
Later reporting warns that intensifying fighting could lead to further mass displacement. The UNHCR says tens of thousands more may be forced from their homes, with departures expected both within Yemen and to Djibouti and other regional destinations.
