Mumbai experiences heatwave-like conditions in October as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues warnings for hot, humid weather across parts of Maharashtra. NDTV reports an IMD yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri, while local forecasts cited by multiple outlets indicate temperatures staying elevated through the week.

At the Santacruz observatory, several reports place Monday’s maximum temperature around 38.2°C, with the reading described as well above normal and among the highest October values recorded in recent years. IMD warnings shift from “hot and humid” conditions to a heatwave-style warning at points during the period, with forecasts suggesting only slight relief after a couple of days. Reporting also links the extreme warmth to early withdrawal of the southwest monsoon and broader climate influences associated with El Niño, alongside changes in wind patterns.

Alongside the heat, air quality worsens. Outlets report Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) moving into the poor range at times, indicating that residents face the combined discomfort of high temperatures, humidity and elevated pollution levels during the same period.
