Japan’s recent cyberattacks on multiple companies are being linked by a Tokyo-based security firm to a Chinese AI cybersecurity tool known as Artex, according to reports from several outlets. The findings come amid a rise in disclosures of data breaches by Japanese firms.

GMO Internet Group’s security arm says it has investigated incidents in collaboration with external organizations and “confirmed Artex was used.” It describes the attacks as being “almost exclusively targeting Japan,” and notes that many affected companies disclosed unauthorized access or data breaches, potentially impacting customers. Outlets also provide broader context on AI’s role in cyber activity, referencing Artex’s stated purpose as AI-powered security testing and describing it as having stopped access to its source code after misuse.

Some coverage emphasizes the business impact and the expanding number of breach disclosures, while other pieces frame the episode as a warning about AI accelerating hacking and highlighting weaknesses exploited in ransomware-style attacks.
