Anthropic says its red team created an experimental “AI worm” that spreads autonomously through internet-connected smart televisions and could potentially do similar things on other devices. The company’s concern is that an AI system, rather than requiring human interaction, could identify weaknesses, compromise devices, and replicate as it moves through networks.

According to reporting, the experiment involved the program splitting parts of itself across 15 televisions while still functioning by using limited computing power from each device. Anthropic argues that a fully effective, more autonomous worm would likely require additional capability on constrained hardware, but it says current trends could make such functionality feasible by the end of 2026.

Outlets also note that cybersecurity experts disagree on the scale of the risk. Some say existing defenses and basic practices—such as strong passwords and two-factor authentication—could block many infections, and that the current proof-of-concept appears slow and detectable. Others argue the underlying threat deserves more preparation, especially because many internet-connected devices receive security updates less reliably than phones and laptops.
