Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed says former President Muhammadu Buhari viewed Bola Tinubu as “bad news” for Nigeria and therefore resisted pressure to hand him power in 2023. Baba-Ahmed made the claims during remarks tied to a summit organised by the Northern Elders Forum, in a video published on Symfoni’s YouTube channel.
Baba-Ahmed says Nigerians should have challenged Tinubu’s ambition earlier, pointing to Tinubu’s pre-election slogan “Emilokan” (“it’s my turn”) and questioning what he called the meaning of a personal turn to lead a country of about 250 million people. He adds that Buhari was reluctant to transfer power after what he believed Buhari realised about what Tinubu’s presidency would mean.
Across the reports, Baba-Ahmed also criticises Tinubu’s administration, alleging deterioration in Nigeria’s conditions over roughly three and a half years in office and arguing that the country is at a low point. He further claims that opposition parties are working on a coalition to challenge Tinubu in 2027, and calls on INEC to ensure the election reflects voters’ will.
