The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it has withdrawn recognition of all its diaspora chapters. In statements carried by multiple outlets, the party says the move follows a subsisting court judgment restricting Nigerian political parties from establishing or operating branches outside the country.
The NDC cites legal basis from a case brought by Prof. Ali Alao against the All Progressives Congress (APC) (Suit No. CV/187/2025). Reporting describes an FCT High Court ruling by Justice Peter Kekemeke stating that political parties registered in Nigeria have no legal authority to run overseas chapters, which the court characterized as illegal and not recognised under Nigerian law.
While all sources agree on the core decision and its justification, they differ mainly in emphasis: some note the decision is framed as compliance with due process, while one outlet links the development to the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. Another adds that the NDC is engaging in a harmonisation process in jurisdictions where more than one group exists, and that its legal department is reviewing the judgment for further guidance.
