Nishad Kumar wins India’s first para-athletics gold at the ongoing Asian Para Games, taking first place in the men’s long jump T47 event in Nagoya. Multiple outlets report that he posts a best jump of 7.11 metres and delivers a “dominant” performance.
The reports add that the T47 classification is for athletes with upper limb impairments. Free Press Journal and others note that this is his first competitive appearance in the long jump. It also says he previously won gold in the high jump T47 at the last Asian Para Games in China and is a two-time Paralympic silver medallist.
All outlets agree on the medal results beyond Kumar: Omadbek Khasanov of Uzbekistan takes silver with a 6.99-metre jump, while Mohammadu Safran of Sri Lanka earns bronze with 6.55 metres. The Hindu also says Kumar will further compete in his other event, the high jump T47, at the Games. Times of India places the long jump win alongside India’s other successes on the same day, including Mona Agarwal’s air rifle gold.
