Former APC deputy national publicity secretary Timi Frank says there is a planned attack targeting opposition figures, including African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, ahead of Nigeria’s January 16, 2027 presidential election. In a statement released Monday, Frank writes to US President Donald Trump and calls on the international community to intervene, saying the allegations should be independently and urgently investigated.

Frank argues that opposition protection is a constitutional duty rather than a matter of government discretion, and he warns the matter should not be ignored until harm occurs. He says the concern extends beyond Abubakar to other opposition leaders who reportedly feel unsafe, while stressing that his position is not to place any candidate above the law.

Separately, the reports note that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened a corruption case against Atiku following a petition by former Edo lawmaker Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma. The outlets do not present additional evidence for the alleged attack plot, and the claims are framed as allegations requiring investigation.
