Amazon is pursuing a deal with X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) to develop a nuclear energy project at a former Indiana coal plant site. Multiple outlets report the proposed facility would use X-energy’s small modular reactor technology and aim to provide roughly 960 megawatts of carbon-free electricity for the regional grid.
The company’s involvement centers on a long-term power arrangement under which Amazon would purchase electricity from the plant and, according to some reporting, help cover the facility’s cost and operations. The project is described as replacing the now-defunct Breed Generating Station in Fairbanks, Sullivan County. Outlets also note that the reactors would be deployed as a set of 12 units.
Timing and risk factors vary by emphasis across sources. One outlet says a final decision is expected by late 2029, while another highlights that the approach depends on reactor designs that are not yet widely proven, framing the effort as both an emissions-reduction initiative and a step toward next-generation fission.
