Brazil’s top electoral court orders Meta to demonstrate that it gives equal treatment to campaign content from incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro on its online platforms. The court gives Meta 24 hours to provide proof and warns of financial penalties if it does not comply.

The ruling comes after allegations from Lula’s campaign that Meta is suppressing Lula’s campaign content ahead of a closely contested presidential runoff. A judge also doubles the daily fine for failure to comply with an earlier court order on political content. Outlets report that the daily fine is set to rise to R$1 million, with the threatened increase reflecting the court’s view that prior directives are not being met or verified.
