Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) uncovers and shuts down a suspected counterfeit alcoholic beverage production facility in Aba, Abia State. Reports say the facility is located at No. 25 Omenazu Street and is discovered after credible intelligence about illegal manufacturing activities.
According to the agency’s account cited by outlets, operatives find the premises operating under unhygienic conditions and the suspected operator flees, abandoning a vehicle loaded with counterfeit packaging materials for brands including Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky. The raid reportedly also turns up materials and equipment used in the suspected production process, including drums with about 200 litres of liquid, ethanol-filled containers, sealing machines, and other items.
Outlets also report that the estimated value of equipment, materials and facility components is over ₦500 million. One outlet adds that NAFDAC has recently carried out other actions against counterfeit alcohol, including seizures at Lagos’ trade fair complex and destruction of fake products in Port Harcourt, while reiterating public warnings about the risks of consuming unregulated beverages.
