An illegal open-pit gold mine collapses in a remote area of Colombia’s Nariño province, killing at least 14 people and injuring seven, according to multiple outlets. Some reports citing earlier official figures say the death toll is at least six, with later updates bringing it to 14.

The incident occurs in the Chambero sector of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé municipality, in southwest Colombia near the border with Ecuador. Outlets also note that illegal and small-scale mining is common in the region and that accidents in the sector are frequent. One report adds that armed groups control parts of the clandestine gold trade, alongside other illicit activities including drug trafficking and extortion.

Across the coverage, the central focus is the death toll and the collapse’s location, with differing emphasis on the scale of casualties as figures are updated and on broader context such as governance efforts to formalize mining operations and improve safety.
