Australia’s government says it will sue Facebook, TikTok and other major social media platforms over alleged failure to comply with a nationwide ban on under-16s. Communications Minister Anika Wells says the action follows concerns that platforms are not meeting their obligations under the age restriction.

The decision is linked to findings from Australia’s eSafety regulator. A July eSafety report says many underage users are still able to keep or create accounts, attributing the problem to ineffective age checks. Outlets also note that the government’s approach involves litigation rather than additional guidance, with the aim of forcing compliance with the requirements tied to the ban.
