Nigeria’s election and technology bodies are warning that artificial intelligence could be used to manipulate voters ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Nigerian IT agency (NITDA) says AI-driven misinformation and deepfakes may distort information available to voters.
Multiple outlets also report that stakeholders at a three-day artificial intelligence and democracy forum—including INEC—are calling for stronger safeguards. They warn that deepfakes, cloned voices, and coordinated disinformation campaigns, alongside cyber threats, could undermine electoral integrity. The emphasis is on prevention and risk management, including the need for oversight when AI tools are used.
While the reports largely align on the threat types and the goal of protecting the electoral process, outlets differ slightly in how they frame the sources of the warnings: some foreground NITDA’s formal warning, while others highlight the forum and the range of stakeholders involved. One report is effectively a duplicate of another, repeating the same forum-based warnings and recommendations.
