A Florida police officer, Brian Louis Sguros of the Lauderhill Police Department, is accused of moving into a deceased man’s home after responding to a welfare check and using the man’s identity to renovate the property. Police say the homeowner, 71-year-old Dennis Ionis West, was found dead in July 2022, with authorities later citing cardiovascular disease as the cause.
Multiple outlets report that Sguros allegedly lived in the house with a partner for years, paid taxes and utilities, and used West’s identity to secure permits for renovations. One report says Sguros claimed he spent $214,000 of his own money and that the renovations increased the home’s value beyond $500,000. Another outlet adds that prosecutors say he forged paperwork using West’s driver’s license and signature.
Outlets also differ on how they explain the case’s discovery. Some focus on the initial welfare-check incident and the alleged identity use, while another highlights that the officer was caught after suing the deceased’s heirs for reimbursement for renovations. All accounts state Sguros has been arrested and placed on unpaid leave.
