The Indian government is drafting amendments to driving licence rules that would tighten the online safe-driving tutorial and change how certain personal details and documents are handled. Multiple outlets report that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposes raising the pass mark for the tutorial, increasing its required duration, and adjusting what can be used as proof for licence-related processes.
Several reports say the safe-driving tutorial must last at least 30 minutes and that the qualifying threshold would rise from 60% to 75%. Outlets also describe a procedure for online applications to change licence particulars such as name and address, including timelines for licensing authorities to approve or reject requests and provide reasons. Other proposals cited include fee waivers for selected online services when completed via Aadhaar authentication.
Beyond testing and administration, one outlet says the draft would introduce nationality details on licences and separate colour schemes for Indian citizens versus foreign nationals. The proposals also reportedly include stricter requirements for proving age and address, including removing affidavits and not accepting life insurance policies as proof. The draft remains open for public feedback before any final decision.
