Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto is named the first video game figure to receive Japan’s Order of Culture. The award is announced by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Miyamoto is credited with creating or shaping major Nintendo franchises, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox and Pikmin. Japan Times adds that the honour is officially conferred at a ceremony scheduled for Nov. 3, while My Nintendo News focuses more on Miyamoto’s role in gaming history and his association with Nintendo’s iconic series. Both outlets frame the development as a first for the video game industry.
