Oil India Ltd says it has discovered natural gas in a shallow-water offshore block in India’s Krishna-Godavari Basin. The company reported peak production of about 200,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) during testing at the Godavari-1 appraisal well. Testing is described as beginning Oct 16, 2026, with continuous output around 100,000 SCMD and condensate production reported at roughly 170 barrels per day.

Oil India says the gas is found in the previously unappraised Matsyapuri formation. It is preparing to test a higher zone to further assess the discovery, but, according to the available summaries, the company has not provided estimates of recoverable resources or a timetable for commercial development. The reports link the find to India’s wider effort to raise domestic natural gas supply and reduce reliance on imports, with the broader policy goal cited as increasing gas’s share in the energy mix by 2030.
