Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Surat is installing 388 spring-loaded “anti-suicide” ceiling fans in its boys’ and girls’ hostels. The university says the fans detach under excessive force and automatically cut off the power supply, aiming to reduce the risk of fatal incidents linked to hanging from fans.
VNSGU Vice-Chancellor Kishor Chavda says the measure is being implemented following guidelines cited by the university from the University Grants Commission, the Supreme Court, and the central and Gujarat governments. The university also says more than 800 students live in the combined hostel facilities.
While multiple outlets report the device’s basic mechanism and the university’s rationale, one outlet adds an additional dimension by noting the move triggers a debate about mental health. Coverage also varies on details such as whether a specific trigger weight is mentioned and whether cost information is provided. Overall, the reports broadly agree on what is being installed and the stated safety purpose.
