Syria is considering whether to join the Mecca defence pact, its foreign minister says. Asaad al-Shaibani tells the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain that Damascus is evaluating entry into the alliance, described as NATO-style and signed in Mecca last August by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan.

The pact treats an attack on one member as an attack on all three. Several outlets link Syria’s discussion to the wider security backdrop in the region, including Saudi Arabia’s campaign against Yemen’s Houthis and reported efforts to bolster air and defence capabilities.

Coverage across outlets largely focuses on the foreign minister’s statement and the basic structure of the alliance. Differences are mainly in how much broader context each includes—some add details about the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen and related Western and coalition support, while others limit themselves to the announcement that Syria is “evaluating” joining.
