A rare, highly poisonous pufferfish has washed up on a beach in Studland, Dorset. Reports say the fish was found on Knoll Beach by a local/free diver and photographed after what initially looked like debris on the sand.

Outlets connect the stranding to recent storm weather, saying the pufferfish likely drifted hundreds of miles from its usual range. Metro and other papers describe pufferfish as an exotic species found mainly in warmer waters, and note that it is dangerous to handle. Metro adds that photographs were sent for confirmation to Dorset Wildlife Trust and a marine biologist, and that the charity advises the public to report any pufferfish they find rather than touch it.

While coverage is largely consistent, the main differences are in emphasis and detail. Some outlets lead with the “blown off course” explanation, while others include a formal warning and contextual information about the species and how to respond.
