Foreign visitors’ card spending in Seoul rises nearly 58% year-on-year to 8.84 trillion won ($6.57 billion) in the first nine months of 2026, according to city government data. The total already exceeds Seoul’s full-year 2025 level, and the increase is linked to a record number of visitors.
Both outlets report the spending is recorded through credit and debit cards from January to September. The mix of spending is led by shopping (46%), followed by medical and wellness services (23.8%). Food and beverages account for 13.3%, while accommodation makes up 10.4%. District-level figures cited include Gangnam Ward as the largest share (29.6%), with Jung Ward next (27.7%) and Mapo Ward third (7.1%).
The two articles align closely in numbers and framing. The Korea Times piece additionally highlights that spending more than doubles in several wards such as Gangdong, Guro, Dongdaemun and Seongdong, and notes growth across major tourist areas including Myeongdong, Gangnam and Seongsu.
