A man who tattooed a Tesco Clubcard QR code on his wrist says he has stopped shopping at the supermarket because grocery prices have risen. Dean Mayhew, 34, from Bideford, says even midweek or regular baskets now cost too much for his family.

Mayhew got the Clubcard code tattoo in July 2022 and tested it by scanning it in a Tesco store, saying it worked under scanners but sometimes required staff to believe it was genuine. He says he no longer does a weekly shop at Tesco and instead buys from rivals such as Morrisons or Asda, which he believes are cheaper.

The outlets differ mainly in emphasis. Metro and the Mirror foreground the cost-of-living angle and Mayhew’s claim that Clubcard savings are no longer meaningful, while Manchester Evening News leads with his statement that he “can’t shop there.” Metro also includes comparative pricing based on research by Which?, while the others focus more on Mayhew’s personal story and spending changes.
