A new scientific study reports that sea levels around Ireland are rising faster than in the past, with the rate increasing more than fivefold since the start of the 21st century.
The research, led by the ICARUS Climate Research Center at Maynooth University, reconstructs a century of Irish sea-level change using tide-gauge data from six locations. It includes newly digitized historical records from places such as Cork, Tarbert and Galway and synthesises those sources into a long-term picture of how sea levels have evolved.
Outlets describe the findings with slightly different emphasis: one focuses on the headline figure of a more-than-fivefold acceleration since 2000, while another highlights the study’s broader reconstruction effort, the international publication context in Ocean Science, and the specific data sources used to reveal the acceleration.
