OpenAI says it built an automated cybersecurity pipeline that identified and validated local privilege escalation (LPE) issues in the Linux kernel, producing 948 working exploits. The results are presented as part of OpenAI’s research into autonomous vulnerability discovery, with the company outlining how its system runs against a target Linux environment and then reproduces and patches findings.

According to the reports, the work involves testing against a recent Linux kernel and a stock desktop operating system from a widely used distribution. Help Net Security and The Hacker News both describe the output as working “root” exploits, while Phoronix focuses on the discovery of valid LPE bugs in the kernel and frames the achievement as evidence of AI capability.

The outlets differ on cost and operational framing. The Hacker News adds that the run took about 30 hours and references API spending, while other coverage concentrates more on the number of vulnerabilities and the existence of an automated process that analyzes, reproduces, and generates patches.
