The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says a viral social media poster claiming it reaffirmed the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is fake. In a post on X, INEC says the poster and its accompanying text did not originate from the commission. It says the publication uses INEC’s logo and the image of its National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, without authorization, and urges the public to ignore it and rely only on verified INEC channels.
The warning comes after a federal high court judgment in Abuja on Thursday that sacked the Mark-led leadership of the ADC and nullified the party’s nomination of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate. The court ruled that the Mark-led caretaker committee of the ADC was illegal and invalidated decisions it took, including Atiku’s nomination. The ruling was made after an application by Nafiu Bala, a former national deputy chairman, challenging how Mark and others took control of the party.
Across the outlets provided, the coverage focuses on INEC’s denial and the unauthorized use of INEC identifiers, with all accounts tying the dispute to the recent court decision affecting the ADC leadership and nominations.
