Ng Wai Han is sworn in as Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, replacing Tai Kin Ip, who resigns for personal reasons in April, according to government announcements. The oath-taking ceremony is presided over by Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai at Government Headquarters, following the playing of the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China. Ng takes office in accordance with Macao’s Law on Oath-taking. Her appointment is approved by China’s State Council on June 10 after she is nominated by Sam in line with the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region.

At the ceremony, Ng says that economic decisions affect the city’s future and residents’ daily lives. Reporting also notes expectations from different sectors that she will advance economic diversification, support employment growth, expand international tourism, and help develop the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) and tourism industries. The announcements emphasize the formal process leading to her appointment, including the State Council approval and the SAR chief executive’s nomination, as well as the public oath-taking step before she assumes the role.
