Bhopal’s Arera Hills police have uncovered an alleged organised vehicle fraud racket involving cars taken on lease or rent and then allegedly sold or mortgaged using forged documents. Police recovered 30 vehicles worth more than Rs 3.5 crore and arrested the main accused, Shailesh Joshi, from Ayodhya Bypass. According to a complaint by Gaurav Kushwaha, Joshi rented out his car for Rs 25,000 per month, stopped paying, and later sold the vehicle after taking an advance of Rs 75,000. Police allege forged paperwork and fake agreements were used, and they also found the vehicle’s GPS had been disabled. Arera Hills police say preliminary interrogation suggests around 35 vehicles may have been involved, with additional accused possibly in the network.
The same modus operandi is being investigated in other cases across Bhopal. Police at MP Nagar and Awadhpuri are probing separate allegations in which leased or rented vehicles were allegedly sold without owners’ knowledge, including cases involving advances paid against fake sale agreements and vehicles later confirmed to have been only leased. Victims in multiple complaints alleged delays in action before the Arera Hills FIR and investigation.
