The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in the Borno/Yobe region are partnering to strengthen intelligence sharing to combat smuggling. Both outlets report that the initiative is intended to improve the identification of corrupt individuals, including public officials, who may be involved in the illicit movement of contraband goods. The cooperation is discussed following a sensitisation meeting with Customs personnel in Maiduguri, where the ICPC provides guidance on the role of intelligence and integrity in enforcement.

Under the partnership, the ICPC and Customs are expected to coordinate information related to smuggling activities and use it to support investigations and enforcement actions. The arrangement also emphasizes transparency, with the focus on exposing wrongdoing tied to smuggling networks rather than only seizing contraband. The ICPC’s stated aim is to help enhance accountability in the region by targeting corruption connected to smuggling in Borno and Yobe, through closer collaboration with Customs authorities.
