A debate on Islam at the Oxford Union on Wednesday drew large-scale demonstrations outside the venue and ended with Tommy Robinson (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) losing to a Palestinian student from Gaza, Arwa Elrayess, who is president of the Union. Robinson spoke in support of the motion, “This House believes the West is right to be suspicious of Islam,” but the motion failed in the final vote.

According to the report, hundreds of protesters—described as largely left-wing and masked—surrounded the building, delays the event for hours and prevented some people, including planned speakers and visitors, from entering. The chamber audience was consequently much smaller than usual. The Union says Elrayess invited Robinson to defend the tradition of free speech and to scrutinize far-right and anti-Muslim ideas through debate.

During the debate, speakers on both sides discussed interpretations of Islamic texts and their compatibility with Western liberal democratic principles. Parliamentary figures and others had condemned the decision to host Robinson. Elrayess also faced internal dispute, surviving a no-confidence vote over the decision. The final motion was rejected by 57 to 41, after a debate that started nearly two and a half hours late.
