The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem denounces what it calls an “unlawful and illegitimate” Israeli seizure of church property in occupied East Jerusalem. In a statement issued Wednesday, the Patriarchate says Israeli forces carried out a raid on Monday in Silwan, near the Monastery of St Onuphrius. It says its representative was removed during the operation, equipment was confiscated, trees were uprooted, and the area was enclosed with fencing and gates.

The Patriarchate states the disputed land is registered under its ownership and warns that the move sets a “dangerous precedent” for church rights in Jerusalem. It also describes the incident as part of a broader campaign to take land, including private property, public land, religious endowments and assets owned by churches.

The Patriarchate says it has already initiated a lawsuit to recover access to the seized property and calls on the international community to intervene to stop what it describes as escalating assaults on the indigenous Christian presence in the Holy Land. The statement also cites prior Israeli military strikes on churches in Gaza.
