A suspected food poisoning outbreak in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra is being investigated after authorities said the number of people with symptoms rose to 107 in connection with food sold at the “Famous Shawarma” outlet in the Khandupada/Khandu Pada area. Initial reports mentioned 11 hospitalised patients, including members of a single family, who developed vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and nausea after eating items such as chicken shawarma and pizza at home. As more patients arrived at the IGM Sub-District Hospital over subsequent hours, the count increased first to 73 and later to 107. Officials said patients are receiving treatment and their condition is reported to be stable, though more cases are not ruled out.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected the outlet and issued a “Stop Business” notice, and authorities collected multiple food samples—including pizza base, mayonnaise and sauces—for laboratory testing. Reports say the shop’s licence and registration had expired in March 2026, although it continued operating. A police case is registered against the outlet owner, Dilshad Ansari, at Shantinagar Police Station, with FDA and police investigating possible violations and negligence. Civic authorities also begin demolition proceedings against the outlet’s allegedly illegal structure and other nearby constructions.
