A suspected food poisoning outbreak in Bhiwandi is reported to affect at least 145 people linked to a popular shawarma outlet in Khandu Pada. According to hospital updates, patients first began arriving in a cluster of 11 and the number then rises over the following days, with ongoing admissions reported on Sunday. Most victims are treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Sub-District Hospital, where the influx of patients strains bed and monitoring capacity; several additional patients are also treated at private hospitals. Reports from clinicians indicate many patients improve and some are discharged, while around 100 remain admitted at IGM.

Municipal and regulatory action is also underway while investigations continue. Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation officials demolish an allegedly unauthorized portion of the “Famous Shawarma” outlet. Separately, the Thane Food and Drug Administration carries out surprise inspections across multiple food stalls and eateries, collecting food samples from several establishments and issuing business suspension notices to four for violations found during inspections. Officials say laboratory testing and reports from police and food authorities are pending to determine the cause and any responsibility. Local political leaders visit the hospital and seek improved care and stronger food safety enforcement.
