In response to a fatal shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, DepEd Region 6 in Western Visayas issues directives to strengthen safety in schools across the region. DepEd Regional Director Cristito Eco orders school division superintendents to ensure police visibility in and around campuses, particularly in areas viewed as higher risk. The regional office also instructs schools to coordinate with barangay tanods to support security arrangements.
Separately, DepEd Region 6 issues an urgent call to tighten campus security procedures and strictly enforce anti-bullying campaigns. The directives follow reports that the shooting occurred on Monday morning on school grounds. Police say two minor suspects, aged 14 and 15, opened fire, killing three teenage students and injuring 20 others. Police immediately apprehended both suspects after the incident, according to the reports cited.
DepEd officials describe the incident as especially alarming because it happened in a setting considered safe for children, and they link the follow-up measures to prevention efforts, including bullying-related interventions, alongside increased on-site security.
