Pakistan’s National Assembly passes the federal budget for FY2026-27 on Tuesday after the opposition stages a walkout, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addresses a recent US-Iran diplomatic development. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb moves the budget bill following the opposition’s withdrawal from the session. Opposition leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai had criticised the government on multiple issues before leaving, including claims of constitutional violations and concerns about the judiciary, and his speech is described as “censored” for not being livestreamed or aired despite earlier changes to dissemination curbs.

In a separate part of the proceedings after Achakzai’s walkout, Prime Minister Sharif tells lawmakers he hopes a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the United States and Iran will produce a “long-lasting agreement.” He recalls that US and Iranian delegations held extended talks in Switzerland over the weekend with Pakistan and Qatar participating as mediators. He says a joint statement issued early Monday calls for US-Iran technical talks over the next 60 days covering Iran’s nuclear assets, ballistic missiles, and frozen assets, and that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is due to visit Pakistan.
