At least one, and later two, people are reported killed by Israeli fire in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. The agency says the victims are shot by Israeli soldiers while they are near an excavator clearing or unblocking a road in a locality near the town of Nabatieh, and it reports that additional people are injured.
The reports describe the incident as the first deaths attributed to Israeli fire since a fragile US-brokered ceasefire begins on Sunday. Hezbollah condemns the firing as a violation of the agreement.
Israeli forces, in a separate account, say their fighters strike armed “terrorists” who pose an immediate threat to soldiers in the Ali al-Taher ridge area, which they say falls within a declared “security zone.” The available accounts focus on both the Lebanese report of road-clearing activity being targeted and the Israeli account framing the strike as aimed at armed threats.
