The Maharashtra government discusses the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state Assembly and moves ahead with drafting plans. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam says the Mahayuti government is “100 per cent positive” about implementing the UCC in Maharashtra. He adds that a committee headed by a retired High Court judge has been constituted to prepare a draft framework and seek public input, with the government to take a final call after receiving the committee’s report. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also backs the proposal, saying the idea is aligned with Shiv Sena’s longstanding position and that leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi hold a favourable view.

The Assembly debate is linked to a calling attention motion by BJP MLA Devyani Farande on triple talaq and protection of Muslim women. Kadam reiterates Maharashtra’s commitment to strict enforcement of the Centre’s triple talaq law and cites police and prosecution figures for 2024 and 2025. He also responds to concerns about polygamy, saying restrictions could be considered within a UCC framework, and points to Uttarakhand’s UCC implementation, which he says prohibits polygamy and imposes imprisonment. NCP MLA Sana Malik argues that atrocities against women should not be viewed only through religion.
