In Pakistan’s National Assembly, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif faces criticism from the PPP and direct engagement with opposition lawmakers. In one matter, PPP leaders respond to Asif’s remarks about Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), after he said Rawalakot is “not Kashmir” and that he does not consider people there Kashmiris. The PPP’s Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari say the comments were sweeping and harmful to public sentiment in a “sensitive area,” arguing they risk inflaming protests. Bilawal questions why Asif remains in the federal cabinet and says the prime minister’s aim of engagement is being undermined by some ministers. Asif had earlier clarified on X that “kashmiriat” is defined by sacrifices and struggles rather than birth certificates.

Separately, Asif tells the opposition to “mend its ways” by examining its own past before criticising the government, and urges lawmakers to sign a Charter of Democracy. He cites past political turmoil between PPP and PML-N and says reforms and constitutional amendments followed prior agreements. He also criticises the PTI government, including actions taken during a prior speaker’s tenure. During the same session, the NA also approves a supplementary budget, according to the reporting.
