A Mumbai magistrate’s court remands 39-year-old Fayaz Nisar Hussain Premji in police custody until July 4 in connection with an alleged poisoning attempt during a Muharram Ashura procession in Byculla. Police say Premji was stopped near Rahmatabad Cemetery in Reay Road after a woman became suspicious of capsules being handed out for free and alerted officers. Investigators allege the capsules were filled with zinc phosphide, a highly toxic substance, and were presented as painkillers and “immunity boosters.” They say police recovered about 14,900 capsules at the scene. Police recorded that at least one recipient became ill, with other reports citing multiple people falling sick; the injured were taken to hospital and are reported to be out of danger after treatment.

Police are probing how Premji obtained zinc phosphide and empty capsules, including claims that he ordered roughly 50 kg of zinc phosphide and tens of thousands of empty capsules online and filled them himself. They are also examining his background, travel history to Iran and Iraq, mental health-related allegations, and whether the act was motivated by personal grievances or involved a wider conspiracy. Authorities say forensic tests on seized capsules and samples are underway, and they have not established any extremist links so far. Political figures have called for an impartial investigation while the case remains under investigation.
