Sungkyunkwan University is selected to take part in South Korea’s National Research Lab (NRL) 2.0 initiative, the university says. The NRL 2.0 program is a government effort to strengthen university-affiliated research institutes and is funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and ICT. Sungkyunkwan’s affiliated Sungkyun Intelligent Energy Solution National Research Laboratory will receive annual support of 10 billion won (about $6.46 million), with total investment expected to reach 95 billion won over the next decade. The laboratory is led by chemical engineering professor Park Nam-gyu. Its research plan centers on building an “intelligent energy platform” that combines energy production, storage, and utilization technologies with artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin tools. The institute also plans to develop industry-specific intelligent energy solutions aimed at supporting stable energy supply and handling rapidly fluctuating energy demand, including that linked to AI data centers. The program includes using technologies such as high-efficiency solar cells as part of its broader energy solution development.
